HS2 Great Worth Green Tunnel

Contractor: EKFB

Products: EasyPIT® ULTRA Access Chambers, FORTIS Multiple Duct Cable Protection

Project: Greatworth Green Tunnel is the longest green tunnel on the HS2 route, stretching for 1.7 miles through West Northamptonshire.

It is one of five cut-and-cover, or green, tunnels on the route. Unlike bored tunnels, green tunnels are constructed at the surface before being covered with earth, helping to minimise the visual impact of the railway and allowing the landscape above to be restored. The tunnel features an innovative M-shaped double-arch design, with separate tunnels for northbound and southbound trains.

Advanced worked closely with its distribution partners and the principal contractor to develop a compliant system for the project’s access chamber and multiple duct cable protection requirements. Through close collaboration and value engineering, Advanced delivered a specification that provided a substantial commercial saving compared with alternative systems available on the market.

The solution included the supply of EasyPIT Ultra access chambers in sizes ranging from 1200 × 1200 mm to 5000 × 3000 mm, together with FORTIS multiple duct systems in 4-Way, 4XL, 6-Way and 9-Way configurations, plus various radius bends. The robust, high-performance systems were designed to meet the demanding infrastructure requirements of this major HS2 project while enabling efficient installation on site.
