HMP Channings Wood

Project: HMP Channings Wood

Location: Newton Abbott

Contractor: Churngold Construction Ltd

Following several months of negotiations and discussions, Advanced have been awarded a contract for the supply of access chambers and ductile iron covers and frames for HMP Channings Wood in Devon.

The oversized chambers include 1500x1500mm, 1800x1800mm and 2000x2000mm clear openings, all with D400 loading, ductile iron, multi-part covers and sub-cover security systems.

Work is underway to expand the prison by adding two new four-storey houseblocks to the existing facility. The project will increase capacity by around 500 places, rising from roughly 730 to over 1,200 prisoner places once complete.

Two new houseblocks will accommodate the additional prisoners and are part of a drive to relieve pressures on the UK prison estate. Also, A facility focused on prisoner education and resettlement training is being constructed as part of the same project.

The new buildings use modern methods of construction (MMC), including energy-efficient and fully-electric design features, and are based on the contemporary “T60” houseblock design used at other recently built prisons.
